HOW TO MAKE LEATHER (SHOE) GUM

            Leather gum is an industrial and domestic adhesive use  in bonding shoe, bag leatheer,funiture,book,fabrics,rugs,vehicle packaging lamination,foam and several other industries. The market for leather gum is very large.Over 2 million tones of this product is used in the different industries in the world  daily.

Raw Materials:

1.Binders:

(a) Natural Rubber:This  is obtained from the rubber tree.It comes in grade A,B,C and the crude types.Any of the grades can be used.

(b) Butadiene:This is a synthetic rubber that available in different grades of glue and rubber types.Popular brands include Neoprene,Bayprene,Camoprene etc.Nitrile is also a synthic rubber that is very soft compared to the prene types.

(c) Hard Resins:They include stabilite gum resin,other olic and rosins.The are binders.

(d) Bitumen: Is is a petroleum based product that is black and soft.It is used mainly for tile and roof sealants.

2. Solvents:

(a) Toluene,Xylene:They are very good solvents for rubber binders.

(b) Naphtha,Hexane:They are also used for adhesive of this nature.They dry very fast.

(c) Ketones,Acetone and Methylethyl ketone (MEK) are some times used to boost dissolution of binders.

(d) Petrol:It is cheap and can substitute for naphtha or hexane.

3. Additives: Additives like magnesium oxide,zinc oxide,zinc stearate,trimethylquinolin (TMQ) etc are sometimes used for various properties that may be desired by the end user.Kaolin and calcium cabonate are also used as filler.

EQUIPMENT/TOOLS:

1.     Mixer: Low speed mixers of 300rpm are suitable.Low speed can also serve.Mixers  can be motorized or manual.

2.     Storage Tanks: Metal,Plastic and other tanks suitable for storage.Tanks should be provided with covers.Chemical drums can be adopted as storage tanks.

3.     Weighing scale and Measuring Cylinders are desirable.

4.     Filling,Sealing and Packaging units can be provided if affordable.

5.     Personal protective gadgets such as boots,hand gloves,respirators,goggles,ear plugs,coverall etc are very necessary.

6.     Laboratory tools are needed where feasible.However quality testing can be contracted out to testing laboratory firms.

7.     Miscellaneous tools such as trollys,scrappers,etc can be useful.

PACKAGING MATERIALS:

Tubes, Jars, cans, Bottles, jerry can, and Drums are in  use.The size of packaging depends on the particular users needs.The sizes range from 10mls, 20mls,50mls,250mls,500mls, 1 litre,5 litres, 20 ltres,50 litres,100 litres and 200litres metal or plastic containers.Cartons,laminates are needed for small packs.labels and packs are well designed and printed. Prints carry brand,maker,quantity,direction for use etc.

SPACE:An open space or well ventilated built space is what is suitable.At micro level one room is suitable.Bigger space will be moere useful. Contact qualified chemist for space design where necessary.
